"When Life Gives You Tangerines" Takes China by Storm – A Sign of the End of the Hallyu Ban?

Netflix’s original K-drama ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’(폭싹 속았수다) has received unexpected praise from Global Times, a Chinese state run newspaper. The article, featuring lead actors IU and Park Bo-gum, highlights the drama as a new hit in the historical genre. This is a surprising shift, considering Chinese media’s usual critical stance on K content, leading many to speculate that the long standing Hallyu ban (Hanhanryeong) may soon be lifted.

On March 27, Global Times ran a front page entertainment feature titled “A New Hit in Korean Historical Dramas”, focusing on Thank You Very Much. Despite Netflix being unavailable in China, the show has garnered significant attention, with many resorting to unofficial viewing methods. The article also noted that the drama achieved a 9.4 rating on Douban, China’s leading review platform one of the highest scores for a K-drama in recent years.

Set in Jeju and ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’(폭싹 속았수다)  tells the life story of rebellious yet spirited Aesoon and kind hearted, devoted Gwansik through the four seasons. With the release of the fourth and final act approaching on March 28, the series has transitioned from spring to summer, autumn, and now winter, promising an unforgettable conclusion for viewers.
